In The News(To keep up with the latest from our up and coming champions follow this link Junior News) -------------------- Back Indoors All members please note we are back indoors from Tuesday 7th October. Dates for the indoor period are Tuesday 07/10/08 to 31/03/09 & Sundays 12/10/08 to 29/03/09. The times for the sessions are on our 'about us' page, please note the Sunday times, due to possible large numbers these times may have to be quite strict so please try to stay in the relevant sessions. (dates and times subject to final confirmation) -------------------- Neston Company of Archers XMAS Party To all Neston C of A members, it is proposed to have an XMAS party / buffet at the Wirral Rugby Club on Friday 12th December 19.30 - midnight. Could you please let either Helen Porter (at the club most Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays) or myself (Steve Morris) know if you would like to come and how many tickets you would require. The cost will be in the region of £10 to £15 which will be confirmed when we have an idea of numbers. -------------------- New & Old (actually both old but who am I to talk?) The future looks good as old hands step up a level and new members press hard. Firstly well done to Graeme Steele (old hand - sorry mate your not a spring chicken anymore) who despite constantly changing / fiddling / tweaking his bow finished 2nd in the gents compound at the Cheshire Championships at Warrington. This qualifies him for the county squad for the first time, well done Graeme. Other results over the Cheshire Weekend were Carol Morris-Lewis 1st for Cheshire in both the Hereford and FITA rounds over the two days and Viv Guthrie who was 1st in the FITA ladies longbow. As for new archers, although he seems to have been around for ages, well done to Steve Povey. He shot in the New Century Novices shoot for first year archers and finished 1st in the gents compound. This was despite shooting at the wrong target (twice I think), don't worry Steve most of us have done that several times. -------------------- A 'Tale' of 'Rough' Weather It is nice to see that you can rely on some things not changing these days and for the past two years the weather at New Century's shoot in Macclesfield has remained constant, that is to say very rough. Strong westerly winds had nothing stopping them as they brought heavy showers flying across the shooting field. As usual a good number of Neston Archers were in attendance and well done to Carol Morris-Lewis 1st ladies compound, Viv Guthrie 1st ladies longbow and Victoria Mara 2nd in the junior ladies recurve. Malcolm and Carol also retained (it's really their trophy) the Jack and Jill Compound trophy. Well done to all those that shot in such windy conditions. -------------------- A 'Tail' of 'Ruff' Justice I am sorry to say I have offended one of our club members and so this message is my way of an apology. To Freckles, please forgive my ignorance, of course you are also a club mascot who has attended many shoots both home and away. I hope you accept my apology and that both you and Ossie will both be our club mascots. -------------------- Mad Dogs and Archers Go Out in the Midday Sun Sunday 13th July 2008 is a day we will recall for years to come, the sun shone for an archery shoot ( no really it did!). To go along with the theme of firsts Ossie the oh so slightly mad dog attended his first official competition, The Wirral Archers Open, in his capacity as club mascot. To those that know me they will understand when I say Ossie really fits my ideals for shooting, he slept most of the shoot and I am informed that he is really only suited to shoots of 6 dozen arrows, that's my boy!! Anyway there was also some Neston archers there and well done to all by being placed in the top three of their respective fields. Carol Morris-Lewis was very pleased by shooting a new Cheshire record for the Albion and with her new bow, coming 1st in the ladies compound. Well done to Helen Porter for coming 3rd in that group. Graeme Steele continued his good year with 1st in the gents compound closely followed by Malcolm Lewis in 2nd. Last but not least was Richie Mellor who came 2nd in the gents recurve. One last thing, Malcolm you cannot shoot another arrow if it goes 10 yards, its a 3 yard let down zone. You really need to hang on until you have full draw on the bow....you would think a coach would know how to shoot !! --------------------- Club Championships It was a good turn out for this years club champs, representing all ages and all bow types. Very windy conditions made shooting quite tricky, you would think with the amount of windy days we have we would be used to it now, still the wind kept the rain off. In our 25th year it was good to have our founder member Bruce Charlton there as Lord Paramount for the day, I hope he was pleased to see how the club is continuing to thrive. Award winners on the day were:- Overall h/c Trophy Robert Spinks, Ellesmere Port and Neston h/c Shield Steve Povey Awards based on Score Senior Recurve Steve Morris, Senior Compound Carol Morris-Lewis, Junior Recurve Victoria Mara, Under 12 Junior Jenny Bathgate, Veteran Bill Judson, Longbow Viv Guthrie, Barebow Lindsey Lawrence, Best Gold Graeme Steele, Most Petticoats Tommy Fells, Most Golds Mark Bathgate, 25 Trophy Andy Sawyer & Toxophilus Book Award Viv Guthrie Well done to you all. Thanks again to our 'mad' photographer Graeme and we all look forward to this years dvd mega motion picture. Thanks to all those who helped with the bbq food & drink throughout the shoot and maybe next year we will have some sun!!! ------------------ W W W W Welsh Whit 'Windy' Western Well done to all Neston archers who turned out for a difficult shoot in the recent Welsh Whit Western. Strong cross winds made shooting conditions very tricky but club archers still managed to do very well. In no particular order well done to the following:- Richie Mellor 2nd gents recurve, Carol Morris-Lewis 2nd ladies compound, a clean sweep in gents compound Mark Bathgate 1st, Graeme Steele 2nd and Malcolm Lewis 3rd, this also gave the guys best compound team, Victoria Mara 2nd junior ladies recurve. It was such a good Neston turn out I would like to thank all the archers who shot:- Richie Mellor, Carol Morris-Lewis, Mark Bathgate, Graeme Steele, Malcolm Lewis, Victoria Mara, Steve Morris, Jenny Bathgate, Oliver Topliss, Steve Povey, Judith Creswell, Helen Porter. ------------------- Bows at High Noon Actually the Bebington Western was at one o'clock but a good old shoot out saw Neston Archers perform very well in near perfect conditions. Graeme Steele continued what looks to be a very promising year with 1st place in gents compound but again he was pushed all the way by Mark Bathgate who was placed 2nd. Helen Porter finished 1st in the ladies compound, and like Graeme retained her trophy from last year. The junior section looks good for the future with Victoria Mara coming 1st in the junior girls recurve, however I feel the shoot of the day must go to Jenny Bathgate who finished 2nd in junior girls recurve with a very creditable score (mid 600's). With these two girls shooting at this level in their age groups the future should be bright. ------------------- County Archers Congratulations to the following archers for qualifying for the Cheshire County Squad, Carol Morris-Lewis, Malcolm Lewis and Richie Mellor. ------------------- Summer is here, just look out the window ! All members please note that we will now be moving outside to our usual summer venue at the Wirral Rugby Club. Sunday 13th April is the last indoor session with the outdoor times shown on the about us page. * * Please note this Tuesday 15th April there will be no shooting for beginners and improvers due to a Cheshire coaches meeting. * * ------------------- Apologies to a talented archer and trumpet player I received an email from Graeme Steele saying that he 'did not wish to blow his own trumpet but', well I say if you have any kind of talent then blow away. Anyway apologies to Graeme for not posting the North Wales Indoor results. He was placed 1st visiting gent compound and 2nd overall in gents compound for a single portsmouth, well done Graeme. Also well done to Victoria Mara for 2nd place in the junior lady recurve, not sure what instrument you play but good shooting. Seriously, to any Neston archer that shoots well and I do not post the results, please 'blow your own trumpet' and let me know. I will do my best to post the results. ------------------- A Tale of the Dark Side and of the Force (the force of chocolate that is!) A LONG TIME AGO IN A GALAXY FAR FAR AWAY.................. oh no it was actually the 2nd March in the Northgate Arena Chester. Congratulations to the Neston archers who shot at the County Indoor Shoot. 1st places were gained by Carol Morris-Lewis, Viv Guthrie and Graeme Steele, with a 2nd for Victoria Mara in the junior girls recurve. Special mention to Steve Povey for his award for highest score for a first year archer. Also well done to 'Lord Vader', I mean Mark Bathgate who shot on the dark side (compound) his first time with compound gaining a creditable 2nd place. Fortunately for Neston, Mark was not completely seduced by the dark side and returned to recurve to help Neston Archers gain superb results on the 24th March in the Corus Deeside Archers Bunny Shoot. In the gents recurve Mark came second only beaten by fellow Neston archer Richie Mellor, however the gents compound went one better with 1st, 2nd & 3rd from Malcolm Lewis, Graeme Steele and Steve Povey respectively. In the ladies compound Carol Morris-Lewis came 2nd and Helen Porter 3rd. Not to be outdone James Mellor placed 1st in the junior gents recurve and Victoria Mara 1st in the junior girls recurve. Well done all and it just shows that Neston archers love only one thing better than archery........and that is chocolate won whilst doing archery. MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU --------------------- Early seasons indoor results look very good for the clubs compound archers:- At Orrell Archers Porstmouth Carol Morris Lewis and Malcolm Lewis both came 2nd in the ladies and gents compound divisions. This was followed by Carol achieving a double 1st on both Saturday and Sunday at the Chester Indoors. The compound team of Carol, Malcolm, Graeme Steele and Dave Fells came 3rd in the Sunday team event. Victoria Mara gave the recurve their only shout of glory when she came 2nd in the junior girls, come on recurve its time to catch up!! (oops sorry thats me, must try harder). --------------------- HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL and may you achieve all this years 'golds.'
